Rockwood, Colorado was where the last forgotten stub switch was located on the old Rio Grande system, at the tail end of the wye. Once the standard of railroad switches, as railroads went to heavier and heavier rail, the "stub" switch, which relied on the lighter and more flexible rail, got changed out and sent to oblivion in favor of the "point" type switch seen today. Here we see John West and friend giving this curiosity a looking over in 1964 - dig them haircuts! The switch survives in service today and has been joined by another placed back into service further down the line. |
