While recently in Salt Lake I had the good fortune of attending the 135th anniversary of the Golden Spike Ceremony which took place on May 10, 1869. On that historic day our nation was connected from sea to shining sea by the first Transcontinental Railroad. A few days before that great event the Central Pacific Railroad set an amazing record by laying 10 miles of track in a single day! This sign marks the spot and the road is the original grade. A work force of over 10,000 men (mostly Chinese) labored dawn till dusk and the record still stands. |
