The Denver & Rio Grande reached Chama, NM in 1880 as it pressed the San Juan Extension into the rich silver mining districts of SW Colorado. This early shot shows westbound number 163 softly steaming, just west of the depot in Chama. Those telegraph lines were all 127's in those days.
