Square poles were somewhat commonplace in various communities in the Boston area around 1900. They were said to be considerably stronger than ordinary round pine poles of the day. Some square poles were crafted by men who designed masts for ships, schooners, etc. Many of the latter were tapered towards their tops which typically were pointed.
