(credit: NTV news) A view of the 2400V side of the Broken Bow, NE municipal system, the plant, and substation. It seems that in the morning on the 20th, the municipal plant had a catastrophic equipment failure, knocking the 2400V system offline. Nebraska Public Power (wholesale energy provider within the state) has dispatched crews and a mobile substation and has been working to get the system back up. It didn't help that temperatures have plunged well into minus Fahrenheit territory (as low as -30). Update: It seems that one of the engines in the plant failed catastrophically and sent a valve cover into the plant's electrical bus. The plant is offline for the foreseeable future, but the city hopes to eventually bring it back online. Power was out to the 2400V section of town for only 33 hours; so I would imagine the city likely built shoofly circuits from the 2400V substation to the overhead lines.
