Rare LR 194 [010] (lightly embossed around the top hole) PATENT PENDING, purple lightning rod insulator. This design was patented by Darius Stebbins of Wallingford, Connecticut and received patent 66,054 on June 25, 1867. There is the original metal disk in the hole through which a wire is threaded through the two holes in the disk and exited up through the hole to wrap around the ground conductor. A metal retaining ring was used to secure the insulator to a wall (not included). The retaining ring would cover all the chipping at the base. The Catalog of Lightning Rod Insulators with Associated Brackets by Stephen E. Bobb values light purple versions of these at $700, medium purple ones at $800, and dark purple ones at $1000 however a purple one that was darker than the one listed here and in better shape sold for $2464 in a January 31, 2022 Pole Top Discoveries auction (Sale #2201, lot 2170). That listing is still available on the internet. 1/4" x 1/2" flake on top near the top hole, 3/16" x 3/8" flake next to this flake, 3/8" x 1/4" flake next to this flake, chipping around the hole, chipping on most of the bottom, 3/8" x 1/4" flake on the flair of the bottom. $710 postpaid, PayPal friends and family, check or money order. |
