NOTE: If you look at the enlargement photo, you will notice quite a few " spark etchings " These make the insulator look as if it had been shot with 22 caliper "rat shot" causing this effect. This piece was collected in the early 1970's and came off the CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY's elevated train lines in downtown Chicago. When removed they were thickly coated with " soot " and other materials, that when finally removed revealed these specks. Seems the sparks from the overhead transit trains would land on these pieces and burn tiny specks into the glass. ( Information from the collector that has had them in his collection for many years )
