The Sharps Tunnel and bridge were constructed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1900. This area is very remote and a remnant of the long abandoned Greenbrier Division. The structure you see hanging over the former ROW is a tell-tale. Back in the days when brakemen rode the tops of train cars tell-tales were installed whenever there was an overhead structure imminent. The hanging ropes would (hopefully) get the brakeman's attention and he would then know to duck down. Very few original tell-tales exist in the modern era. Most were removed decades ago. |
