Recently, a glass historian friend of mine offered me a few CD 122 Dominion - 16s that he had obtained from the Dominion Glass Co Wallaceburg, Ontario plant. When it closed in the 1990s, he had used some connections to be able to remove a number of objects from the site. These had been held in the sample room - once used to keep samples of all the products that the glass factory had produced. Even after the plant was sold to Libbey, apparently most of these products stayed in the vault and collected dust for several years before being offered to my friend. This insulator doesn't have any special characteristics apart from its interesting provenance. It's a common embossing type: DOMINION - 16 on the front skirt, and D inside a Diamond on the rear skirt, with a '66' date code beside it, and a '14' mold code below it. 1966 isn't even the last year Dominion produced insulators (1967 was), but obviously the plant didn't deem it necessary to keep samples from the final production year. The glass on this one is absolutely colourless, and the insulator is, of course, in sparkling mint condition. It was obviously never used. I'm not sure if anyone else finds this type of provenance to be as interesting as I do, but I thought I'd share this piece here just in case. |
