This will be the last series of pictures from our insulator recovery project at the former Pressed Steel Car Company in Mckees Rocks, PA. In later years this place became Mckees Rocks Industrial Enterprises. Long after the insulators were abandoned in place the mill site soldiered on as a transloading facility between barges and trains/trucks. Minerals and powders rose up to the sky from the transloading process and covered the glass in a thick coating of dust. I would hate to know what we breathed in as we rescued as much glass as we could. Perhaps this is a good time to mention how incredibly difficult it can be to find and remove insulators in the wild. Even with full permission from the plant manager and machines lifting us to the rafters it was a long, sweaty, dirty, and sometimes dangerous process. If you have ever hunted insulators in the wild for any amount of time you already know this. I wouldn't have it any other way, though! The adventure of the entire ordeal is well worth it in the end! |
