This Specimen CD 701.6 Confederate "Egg" threadless insulator was won by me in the Eagle Cap Collectibles auction at the start of February 2024.

For historical reasons, I became fascinated by these insulators dug from the site of a warehouse in Richmond, VA that was one of the many industrial buildings destroyed when a fire was started by evacuating Confederate States military forces just after midnight on April 3rd 1865.

This Specimen example went for exactly my personal bidding limit and at the time I never even gave a thought to the fact that it was threadless. It has lost its round shape and has indentations where other eggs pressed against as the warehouse burned down. There is also surface scarring of a lighter color, which I believe happened when it was separated from those adjacent when it was dug out the ground in 1990.

It might be a Specimen example of a CD 701.6 but I will cherish it and the story it tells. It has also gotten me interested in threadless insulators.
