My current project. Our two car garage. Tearing out the old crappy sheetrock that was falling down and insulating the ceiling. Fixing all the shortcuts the previous people did and putting up 5/8" OSB painted white. Also put up new LED lights. Walls are next, new shelves, workbench, pegboard area, and lower bike hooks for Katrina and April. The ceiling hooks are tough for Katrina to use. More details below if you're curious. The ceiling joists span 25 feet with no support in the middle. So they put a huge LVL beam up at the ridge when they added the third garage in the 90's. They nailed plywood to the beam and then nailed a 2x4 flat to the bottom edge of the plywood. Then nailed the 2x4 to the ceiling joists. Well, over the last 30 years of hot/cold cycles and humid/dry cycles; the nails holding the ceiling joists started to slip. Below is a picture where I can get my fingers between the boards. There's 14 nails in a 3x3 inch area. If four nails aren't holding; add ten more!! Once the ceiling was fixed and stable; I started putting in R19 insulation. Just finished the ceiling yesterday and as soon as the last piece of insulation went in I swear the temperature went up ten degrees in thirty minutes. I really like how much brighter and cleaner it looks. I'll do a final update when the walls and shelves are finished. |
