The former C&NW mainline heading south from Rapid City still has a few stretches of poles remaining and would be worth hiking for those so inclined. The outer 4 pins had copper wire and were always supported on 42s and 45s (I have seen a few fang drip Hemi blue 42s from this line), but it's the middle pin and its iron wire you want to watch - this line has yielded CD 126, 126.3, 145 CREB, 145 HG Petticoats, 152s, 147s (including 'no name' Hemingray and errors). In fact, this pole has an 1870 date CREB and one possible fang drip 42 on it - this is north of the Daugenbaugh Road crossing. There's one section I never got to explore, the tracks make a sharp curve so the telegraph line simply takes off overland. |
