These pictures are for those who are interested in seeing the abandoned portion of the transcontinental railroad near Lookout, Wyoming. As far as I know all sections of the abandoned ROW are on private land around here. A contact in Rock River strongly encouraged me to get permission from whatever landowner whose property I was going to be on. If not there would be a chance of looking up and seeing a shotgun pointed at me by a ranch hand or a state trooper waiting at my car whenever I got back to the road. So ask permission I did. I passed 8 to 10 loaded cattle trucks on an 8-mile driveway of one of the locals. At the end of the trail I met a small group of real (i.e. not eastern wannabe) cowboys and a dapper looking older gentleman who was the man I wanted to see. He gave me permission to access his property for the day and told me where to park at Lookout. What followed was a fascinating hike with no complete insulators found. The wind blowing off the front range of the Rocky Mountains absolutely howls on the Laramie Plains at times and this day was no exception. It was very uncomfortable at times to this eastern city boy. One thing I remember near the end of the day was walking back towards my car and seeing a Union Pacific train in the distance on the current transcon. The wind had completely stopped and you could hear a pin drop in the sage grass. Matt |
