I first met Bob in 1981 after getting out of the military. I was getting back into the hobby after 3 years in the Army. It was collectors like Bob Alexander, Mel Shootman, Mike Sebatos, and Mike Bliss who helped me get some of my first rare insulators. I had heard many stories about Bob but didn't realize most were true until we went on a road trip together to the 1984 National in Tacoma. It was a journey filled with adventure and misadventure. I learned very quickly that travelling with Bob often included, shall we say, questionable acts. There were two events in particular that could have led to a small concrete enclosure. The trip also had many high points that included me soloing Mt. Rainier just before the start of the show. The National, the climb, and the journey, were all epic. I may wright a story about it for an upcoming Drip Points. We went on one other road trip together and kept in loose contact over the years. I suppose I may have intentionally distanced myself a little based on some of the not favorable stories that surrounded him. He also had many contributions to the hobby and was a likable guy. He went through a lot of ups and downs and none of us can truly imagine the difficulties he may have faced. All I know is that he was always nice to me, and I pray you are in a better place free from pain and worry. Rest in peace Bob. Photo taken at the Farmington National |
