Here I am some years ago taking a moment at lunchtime to pose next to my truck for this photo. I started with the Light Plant in 1981 in developing a residential energy conservation program in response to Massachusetts state law passed in 1980 that required all electric utilities to deliver on-site energy conservation services and audits to any customer who requested them. Hingham had about 8,000 residential customers at the time. The program was approved in May 1981 by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy Resources and was the first of its kind in the state. All others employed the services of a large privately operated company to fulfill these requirements. By the mid-1980s some of the other 39 municipal light plants here in MA began to offer their own home-spun energy services after witnessing the success of the Hingham program. I was most pleased to assist numerous other municipal light departments interested in developing their state-approved programs.

I also filled in as a meter reader and assistant meterman. When my supervisor retired in 1987 I was promoted as technician, supervising most responsibilities in the meter department as well as continuing as their outreach person in regard to energy surveys, high bill complaints, etc. I attended several two-week courses hosted by the Electric Council of New England which enabled me to attain meterman journeyman status by 1990. This work involved everything from meter testing/installations to working with the special function metering in the town's 115kv to 13.8kv substation.

My experience has been most rewarding and fulfilling... stuff I wanted to do since childhood!!
