In a place known more for dust and heat than moisture, K-36 number 488 waits its turn for water before being rehooked with their train for the continued trip over 10,000 foot Cumbres Pass. This is the end of the line for standard gauge operations and only the 3-footers go west from this point. Straight ahead is the spur that once was the "Chili Line", going all the way to Santa Fe. This line was abandoned in 1941. The main curves off to the right, in front of the depot. You can still ride the trains here today! Photo shot July, 1963, courtesy of John West.
