Rochester is one of numerous cities and towns in southeast Massachusetts that was served by the Southern Massachusetts Telephone Company. The latter was founded in 1879. Through the years, their exchanges were purchased by the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company until fully absorbed by them in 1938.
