Alamosa Yards

Poking around the Alamosa yards, one would have been subjected to scenes like this. Alamosa was a division point, with a large shop and repair facility. It was also where the San Juan extension narrow gauge started, meaning: this was as far east as the narrow gauge could go. Once, the line was all 3 foot gauge from Denver to Silverton, but only the San Juan extension survived in slim gauge to the end. Note the 3 rail set up for both gauges! Note the size difference between the 3 foot cars and the standard gauge! Note those switch stand lamps that were still there in 1977 !!!!! This was shot July of 1963. Photo courtesy of John West.
