Pan Am started in 1981 at the time that the Guilford Transportation Industries (GFI) purchased the Maine Central Railroad and then in 1983 purchased the bankrupt Boston & Maine. GFI then purchased Pan Am railway from Pan Am Airways that was going into bankruptcy. In 2006 the railroad was rebranded as Pan Am and has been moving freight throughput New England with great success after many rail operations have failed.
