These were the first type of arc lights used for street lighting in the United States. They emitted a very bright and intense bluish-white arc where the two vertical carbon rods inside it came close together. By the late 1890s, enclosed arc lights were introduced and started to become more popular. These were somewhat more energy efficient and required arc rod maintenance and cleaning once only every 7 to 10 days.
