Constuction on the New York and Erie Railroad started in 1836 and was fully opened by 1851. In late 1859 the railroad went into receivership and was reorganized on June 25, 1861 as the Erie Railway. This is an 1884 map of the various routes the E.R. took through New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
