The following picture post shows the Southern Railway "Excursion Train". Southern Railway started running their older steam locomotive trains around 1960. In the late 1960's, routes included weekend trips from Macon to Augusta and Atlanta to Augusta. This picture was taken in the early fall near Grovetown, Georgia. I heard that when Norfolk Southern Railway purchased Southern Railway, they continued and expanded the scenic railway program in Georgia. I suspect that in this year (2020) COVID-19 may have had an impact on the program. The one thing I note is the environmental impact that the old steam locomotives had. They really make cleaning a CD 127 very difficult. I'm also going to post a picture of the newer diesel locomotives that ran the track during the late 1960's and 1970's. |
