I've received numerous e-mails regarding my ICON posts concerning insulators found on the Central of Georgia Railway. The attached early map will give a better understanding of the various routes that I've hunted during the period 1968 to 1972. My recommendation is to download the map .jpg and expand it on your computer screen. Note: many if not most of these routes have now been abandon and /or converted to Georgia's "Rail to Trails" program. You probably can get information by doing a Google search of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources website. Based on walking many of these routes I would expect that you can find some spectacular hikes - especially between Atlanta, GA West toward the Stone Mountain area. Note: I've gotten a number of questions concerning the date of this map. As best that I can tell, it was published in 1909. It's only a guess, but I would think the main Central of Georgia lines between Atlanta to Albany; Fort Valley to Columbus; and Macon to Savanna would be in operation during the 1860's. Older threadless, Western Union, and Boston Bottle Works were found on these lines confirming their age. |
