Boston, 1897 Tremont Street Subway Station Under Construction, Jumbo Pins, Pic 1

This image was taken during July 1897 and this section of the Boston subway system opened not too long afterwards. As you can see the crossarms were installed on each side of the station's walls. The insulators and cables were placed into service soon thereafter with four CD 140s per arm. The latter were painted white while the threaded areas of the pins were not. Or perhaps they were coated with a dark protective material. Tremont station is between the Park and Boylston Street stops and the cables supported by CD 140s extended to Park and Boylston, on each wall. According to a transit authority employee these arms were still there 20 years ago. The ones in Park, Tremont and (approaching) Boylston stations are visible to this day to transit riders.
