Quincy is located immediately south of Boston. I am very familiar with the area having looked at just about every pole in town at least three times through the decades and I enjoyed finding a few nice insulators there, too. The pole lines you see are examples of some old 4kv construction that stood until the late 1990s when most of the city was converted to 13.8kv distribution. Lots of 1920s and later poles were still around. Upgrades commencing in the teens brought about porcelain insulators for line work. The previous glass pintype ones the system had were no longer used. The distribution was initially owned by the Quincy Light and Power Company. In 1960, it became the Massachusetts Electric Company. The white crossarms were for the city's fire alarm system. They were all over town until the 1990s when many poles were being replaced for upgrades. Quincy still retains its fire alarm call box system, like numerous other communities (including Boston) here in Massachusetts. |
