Hard to believe I was able to find remnants of the wire, where 40 some years earlier I got some Surge insulators off the wire. This shot shows me holding the tie wire on the main wire where I unwrapped the tie wire to get one of the Surge insulators. It was about 1976-77 when my friends and I were rabbit hunting along the old GR&IRR just south of Laotto, Indiana. While crossing a trestle on the other side I happen to look down and saw glass down on the dirt. When I got down to check it out it turned out to be a whole Surge insulator with the tie wire and main wire still attached to it. I pulled on the wire and about four more Surge insulators buried in the ground came out. I could pull only so far until tree roots stop me from pulling any farther. Also, a few more were found still on the wooden side brackets pins along an old fence roll. A lot of the post still had the wooden pins without the insulators. As late as the late 90's I was still able to find one Surge mostly buried in the ground at one of the post. I still have three of the Surge insulators with two still on the wooden pins. Pictures # 2 and 3 shows the post today with still remnants of the wood that held the wooden pins attached to the post, which are actually stick rail cuts. Picture # 4 shows the wooden trestle. This railroad was also the very first railroad that I picked insulators from when the pole line was cut down in 1971. My friends and I did 20 miles round trips getting as many insulators we could carry in our backpacks. I was 12 years old at the time on these trips. |
