I took this photo a few days ago. There was a massive flock of over 100 Amazon parrots in the area (I took a video, replayed it then paused the video and counted each one). A few split from the flock and landed in a tree near me and that's when I took a few photos..

Anyway, I started researching on how to identify the many types of Amazon parrots and was surprised to find that this particular one might be a 'Lilacine' specimen that is considered endangered. Note the black beak instead of yellow beak and the lack of a forehead. Most telling is the orange iris, not yellow iris typical of most other Amazon varieties.

I am not sure this is the endangered Lilacine Amazon but at first blush it appears to be, and part of a massive flock of Amazons in Southern California no less! This was without a doubt the largest flock of Amazon parrots I have ever seen.. LOUD!!!!

Compare this one to the photo of the Green-Cheeked Amazon I took that was also a part of this massive flock!
