Is there such a thing as a clear California insulator? Inquiring ICON minds want to know. Brent Burger says there is no way that California's early 20th century glass clarification techniques could possibly produce glass as clear as Pyrex glass whose glass formulation was registered with the US government in 1915 (the CGI plant closed the previous year), but Pyrex communication insulators were not produced until the 1920's through early 1940's. Brent is willing to keep an open mind, but challenges all Rohde Ranch attendees to show him a clear California insulator as clear as Pyrex glass. Some old-time collectors say such crystal clear Californias exist, but I am not so sure. So the challenge is issued. Can you blow Brent's socks off? Can you fill that diaper? Can you refute 50 years of insulator collecting wisdom?

To prevent collector shenanigans, all color comparisons will be done in the pictured box, which has no outside light source to hide tints and off-color casts. The box is shielded on the sides and paneled with flat white poster board to prevent glare and excessive reflected sunlight.

An example is pictured showing a "clear" California hoopskirt against a clear Pyrex CD 128. The Cal was prepped for this competition with consecutive baths of acid and bleach and dried with white Wonder Bread. Obviously, this Cal is just a pretender, but the question is: "Can you do better?" "Is your Cal clearer?"

Winning California insulator owner earns bragging rights and a 2-night stay in Brent's buried school bus. Visit Colin Jung's sales tables to log your Cal contender.
