I used birds-eye maple for the first time in my 40+ years of wood-working. It is by far the hardest domestic wood I have ever worked with (purple heart is even harder). Cutting the curves with a sabre-saw was very nerve-wracking if not difficult. Sanding them smooth was even harder.
