After the recent discussion of the show, "Hell On Wheels", I decided to dig out this old Kodachrome from 1977. The view is from the top of Donner Pass, looking east. Truckee is the town seen just beyond Donner Lake, at the bottom of the pass. The highway is old U.S. 40. And, the railroad can be seen, just barely, near the top of the forested hillside, at very far right. The railroad, owned by Southern Pacific at the time of this photo, winds along hillsides, into valleys hidden from this point of view, until it eventually drops down into Truckee. Interstate 80 winds down the mountainside at left. Reno is about 40 miles away, behind the ridge-line at left. The high, snow-covered peak is Mt. Rose. |
