By 1838, the New Haven & Hartford RR was already busy acquiring rights-of-way along the swampy New Britain/Newington border. Originally planned to make it's way through the center of Newington, this proposal was quickly defeated by townspeople who feared the frightful distraction to livestock and influx of strangers.
