It is hard to describe the scale of one of these if you have never seen one in person ... this lilyshell monstrosity is perhaps one of the largest pin type insulators ever installed on a line . This specimen was "Kitsulaterd" from a top recovered from the Thomas factory dump in the early 1990's and the correct set of lower skirts which were also used with the M-3890a . the only known use of this insulator design was on a line that powered the gold mines of Guanajuato Mexico . The line was origionally built in 1902-03 and used Fred Locke M-3725's but problems with the original insulators necessitated the reinsulation of the line with larger insulators of the M-3890a and M-3990 designs . This specimen did not come from the line though . It uses a new old stock top found in the Thomas factory dump combined with the correct lower skirts from a different source produced during the same time at the Thomas factory . The lower skirts of this insulator were used with three different tops each having it's own M# Only one whole insulator has been brought back from Mexico but it is thought that many may remain in service or out of service on abandoned structures . Do to the riskyness of travling down there I have not myself ventured down to look for them but I think about it often! |
