All of us vintage hydro fans know how famous the hull in the middle of this photo is. Recognize the tail fan? Yup, The Miss Madison, winner of the historical 1971 Gold Cup in Madison. Now for the rest of the story. This is actually the Nitrogen Too at the 1960 Silver Cup in Detroit, 3 years before becoming the Miss Madison(2). She gained her fame 11 years before the famous Gold Cup in Madison. This Les Staudacher hull with a stock Allison, driven by a youthful Ron Musson found a way to soundly defeat the more powerful Rolls Merlin Miss Thriftway with the crafty Bill Muncey at the wheel. And lets not forget the perennial front runner Gale V on the outside charging hard, driven by the master Wild Bill Cantrell. All three men were national champs and gold cup winners and considered to be three of the greatest hydro drivers the sport has ever known. Vintage hydroplaning at it's finest.
