Here we have a CD 154 Diamond [010] which I think is peach but I'll call it dark straw to be safe. It has the metal shield affixed which has been found on CD 154's in a few areas in Canada. This one is a little unusual because it has "something" embedded in the metal shield. You can see it in the photo as the slightly oval object visible on the shield. The collector I purchased it from said it was a .22 caliber bullet. I will say that it does look like a bullet that flattened out on impact and partially penetrated the shield. I have never had the shield off the insulator. Looking in the pinhole it looks like the flattened "bullet " may be in contact with the surface of the outer skirt but it is hard to tell. The insulators is clean and has no visible damage. If this "bullet" was fired at the shield when it was on this insulator, it seems to me there should have been some damage to the outer skirt, so maybe this shield was removed from the original damaged insulator and placed on this mint piece? If this is the original insulator, Mr. Donald H. Smith who was granted a patent for this shield in 1937 (see US Patent 2,099,540) would be mighty proud because it protected the insulator exactly as he described in the patent specification. $60 and that includes Priority Mail shipping. Canadian destinations will be an additional $10. I can only accept PayPal for this sale. |
