Two things here I can't figure out. One looks like a but-capp for the top of a pole but what would the purpose of that be?

The second smaller items look like they held wood pins. Would they have been bolted to the tops / sides of telephone poles, trees, etc.?

I figured out what the objects I thought looked like butt-caps are used for. I saw some more elongated ones on the ends of two vertical side by side poles which held a third pole horizontally across the top.

Still can't figure out what the small things are but got a suggestion that they were maybe used on a guy wire.
