Spring is here and God's little creatures are excited! This little guy has been guarding my hummingbird feeder (make that 'HIS' hummingbird feeder) relentlessly. The only time other hummers can approach the feeder is when this little watchman flies off to ward off another male. One thing I just realized is that the color they display is not merely dependent upon how they turn their heads in relation to the sunlight.. It's more complicated that that.. When they get excited or alarmed by the presence of another hummingbird or foe, their feathers instinctively protrude upward slightly to create an angle which catches the rays of the sun. So there is a physical 'fluffing' of the feathers which brings the vivid color and not merely happenstance of head or body position. Fascinating stuff.. I hope you enjoy my photo! |
