The Poe Manufacturing Company mill was completed in 1896-1897 in Greenville, South Carolina. Poe mill was a very successful company in the Greenville area until its final shutdown in 1977. From 1977 on, the Poe Mill Village became a poverty-stricken area but recent hopes try to change that. In 2003, Poe mill was destroyed by fire, typical after abandonment. Since then the two iconic smokestacks stand on site. Recent efforts push to make the former site a park. In the foreground are the tracks of Southern Railways Air Line. The postcard was created before many realignments in different sections of track. This section was not one of the rerouted sections. Postcard image located at: http://scmillhills.com/mills/poe/ |
