Here are pics of several other spiral holders like Michael Gibbons'. They are actually pen holders for dip (ink well type) pens. I used to collect them and had about 20 at one time. Some of the cast iron ones are quite ornate.

They are often misidentified as letter holders but wouldn't be very useful as such due to the gap size of the coil and the narrow diameter among other things.
