These were incandescent and the fixture type shown is known among vintage street lighting enthusiasts as the "gumball" type. Longer-lasting and more energy-efficient mercury vapor street lights did a lot of these lights to their demise later in the 1950s. Nowadays street lighting poles like these are sometimes seen as historic reproductions supported by nifty scroll undersupports and efficient light sources within them.
