Here's a great example of how battery rests were used. This is copied from, "Storage Batteries--Stationary and Portable", by J.T. Niblett, published in 1911 by Frederick J. Drake & Co, Chicago.

Note the use of four smaller battery rests under each battery jar, then the four larger battery rests under the support rack.
