This is a blow-up of the instruction card which shows how the Three Varley Method is used to locate line faults. This item [id=361298744] could very well have been used to effect the required connections to the open wire pairs in the field.

With the open wire line resistance between 4 and 10 Ohms per mile, very accurate resistance readings were needed to determine the location of the fault.
