This unique Locke advertisement was found by Bob Stahr in the February 1905 issue of American Electrician. It highlights their winning the gold medal for Locke's famous display of insulators at the St. Louis World's Fair in the Summer of 1904 [id=295265672]. Also see this article in the Insulator Gazette: http://reference.insulators.info/publications/view/?id=9575. We know Fred Locke was still active in the Locke plant at Victor (had not "retired" yet) because Fred Locke's family (Jim Kimble's mother) still has the medal presented to him. But there is a mystery that we cannot explain. This advertisement and the trade journal article specifically states a gold medal was awarded to Locke, but the square metal in the Locke family is embossed "SILVER MEDAL; 1904 ST LOUIS LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION". You can see photos of both sides of this medal on page 177 of my book, Fred M. Locke: A Biography. |
