Students whether in the public school system or in college have always loved to have fun. I am no exception. One would think that a hundred years ago that teachers and instructors as well as the education system were very strict. Indeed they were as in later years "old school" becoming an adjective for the earlier-day, rightful, "correct" way of doing things. Apparently the adminstration at the college who printed this poster and made it public on campus that some students were stepping "well over the line..." Way over it.... Students love to break loose from their intense studies once in a while to have fun. Always did and probably always will. This "notice" brings fond memories of when our principal (at Weymouth, MA High School) made some pretty harsh comment on the public-address system that our class was the very worst and most dreadful one he had encountered during his *many* years of involvement with the public school system. His announcement was in response to the majority of senior students participating during the prior week for "Senior Skip Day". This was in 1969 and I will always remember his angry diatribe. This took place in May, a few weeks before graduation. If only someone had a recording of this.... Most of my classmates participated in this freebie one-day-getaway and I was no different. The "big plan" was to spend the day at a park near Cape Cod. Doing what...I do not know. And I probably do not want to. Anyway, I went to school on a nearly empty school bus that day and walked in the High School's front door and right out the back by the gymnasium without being noticed. Ever since our principal's harrowing comments I remain proud of the fact that I participated in Weymouth High School Skip Day, 1969 event. Albeit enjoyed in my own way that absolutely none of my fellow classmates would ever understand (but today they might!). From there I had a great day! I had met up with my cousin a few miles away (this was done by secret prior arrangement) picking a lot of deep olive CD 252 No. 2 Cable's and CD 160 "B" baby signals from a defunct line. Now, that was REALLY having FUN! Joe Maurath, Jr. ================================ |
