Organized in 1882, the Newberry Cotton Mills, Newberry, SC, opened in 1885. The mill was designed by the Lockwood, Greene & Company with addiitons added on in 1895 and 1910. Newberry Mill was one of few early cotton mills operated by early steam power. Newberry Cotton Mills closed in 1982. The mill and village was listed on the National Register in 1980 as a mostly-preserved mill town.
