The very first mill in Apalache was built in 1838 by Rev. Thomas Hutchings. It was named Cedar Hill by the South Tyger Cotton Manufactory. As the mill changed owners, the name would can from Cedar Hill to Arlington and later Apalache Mill. The original wooden mill was replaced in 1902 with the one shown. Condition in the mill were horrible, in 1934 a strike broke out lead by the United Textile Workers. It was the largest in history up to 1934: http://www.slobotabouttown.com/mill_mania_three.html The mill is now being converted into condos overlooking Lake Apalache. http://www.flickr.com/photos/27750883@N08/2581684381/ |
