The first cotton mill in Tucapau, SC was established in 1895 (shown). A second mill was finished in 1903, by that time the Berry Shoals power plant provided the mills with electricity.

The great Pacolet River Flood of 1903 flooded the bottom floor of the Tucapau Mill. The damage wasn't as destructive as the Clifton and Pacolet mills experienced.

By the 1950s the mills and community became known as Startex. In 1998, the mills shut down and were later torn down. Soon after demolishion the Startex Tucapau Historical Society was formed in memory of the mill and town.
