The Spartan Mills were created in 1888 and their first mill started operated in 1890 near downtown Spartanburg, SC. With great success of the first mill, a second was built in 1896 and the company became one of the most well-known textile companies in Upstate South Carolina.

Around 1912, an epidemic spread across the Spartan mill town, pellagra. It was unknown what the causes were until a hospital was set up. It was later found that it came from bad corn and food.

The mills were demolished a few years ago. Condos would have been an excellent choice for the mill with easy access to downtown Spartanburg but it wasn't tought of till after the mill was demolished.
