The Spartan Mills were created in 1888 and their first mill started operated in 1890 near downtown Spartanburg, SC. With great success of the first mill, a second was built in 1896 and the company became one of the most well-known textile companies in Upstate South Carolina. Around 1912, an epidemic spread across the Spartan mill town, pellagra. It was unknown what the causes were until a hospital was set up. It was later found that it came from bad corn and food. The mills were demolished a few years ago. Condos would have been an excellent choice for the mill with easy access to downtown Spartanburg but it wasn't tought of till after the mill was demolished. http://scartists.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=103281&category_id=348&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=71 |
