Almost a month ago today, I noticed a killdeer hanging around in my gravel driveway. She complained loudly each time I walked to my mailbox. Knowing that killdeer nest in open gravel, I snooped around and sure enough, I found four eggs laid in a little scooped out depression near the edge of my driveway. The eggs were speckled just like the gravel. They blended in so well, they were virtually invisible. I cordoned off the nesting zone with some 2x4's, and waited for the chicks to hatch. Here's momma, sitting on her four eggs shortly after building the nest. |
