At all the camps around theatre, we burn the trash to keep vector down, reduce bulk, and destroy materials we do not want falling into enemy hands. This is Camp Dwyer. Largest USMC camp in the far south of Afghanistan, It sits upon a tabletop plateau to the west of the Helmand River. It is utterly parched here and tremendous dust storms are a regular thing throughout the hot season. They are usually preceded by large dust devils that put a ton of dirt in an otherwise clear sky. This one just happened to cross the burn pit area and what a mess it made !
